Museu de Montserrat

This important museum came about thanks to the Benedictine monk Bonaventura Ubach (1879-1960). In 1911, after returning from his first trip to the Holy Land, a small room inside the monastery was converted into a gallery exhibiting pieces of ancient art. It was then known as the Museu Bíblic.

As the collection grew, it was gradually moved to a space under the monastery square once occupied by the restaurant, designed by the modernista architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch. There are currently more than 1,300 works on display by great artists such as Caravaggio, El Greco, Dalí, Picasso, Degas, Monet and Renoir. The museum also showcases one of the most important collections of Catalan painting of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Lovers of ancient art can enjoy pieces from Mesopotamia, the Egypt of the pharaohs and early-Christian culture. There is also a unique collection of Slavo-Byzantine orthodox icons. In addition to the wide variety of works in different styles and from different eras, visitors can also explore the Nigra Sum room, showcasing different artists' depictions of Our Lady of Montserrat, or La Moreneta, the patron saint of Catalonia.

The museum also has a programme of temporary exhibitions.
